HANDICAP SYSTEM

LEGION GOLF SOCIETY (est. 1980)

Because some members do not have an official club handicap, and in some cases only play infrequently without the submission of cards, it is proposed to award Handicaps in the following manner. This should then give everyone the opportunity to go up, as well as down, according to their playing ability, without recourse to arguments over their respective merits.

Golf, being a gentleman’s game of honesty and integrity, the numbers game is not intended to be implemented or applied for pecuniary gain!

1.                 Each member will have a Handicap allotted, as assessed previously by their club or Society.

2.                 No player shall have a handicap of more than 36 points.

3.                 A player, scoring more than 10 points less than the winner, will receive  shots back on his Handicap with immediate effect as outlined in table 1 depending on their banding;

4.                 A player scoring within 10 shots of the winner retains his existing playing Handicap.

5.                 Competition winners and runners up will be cut depending on their banding as set out in table 1;

6.                 A player, in excess of 36 points will also have shots deducted in the following manner:

·        37-38 points = one shot;

·        39-40 points = two shots;

·        41-42 points = three shots;

·        42-43 points = four shots;

·        44-45 points = five shots, etc, etc.

7.                 No player can be more than TWO shots above his club or official Handicap. i.e. 10=12; 20=22; 24=26, etc.

8.                 A player needs to play every 6 months to keep their handicap.

9.                 If a player hasn’t played with the Society for 6 months then their handicap will need to be assessed by the handicap secretary after playing to determine if their handicap needs amending and for that round they will be deemed a guest of the Society.

10.              If a player hasn’t played with the Society for 6 months then they can proactively ask their handicap to be reduced. Their handicap will still need to be assessed by the handicap secretary after playing to determine if their handicap needs amending further and for that round they will be deemed a guest of the Society.

11.              Captain’s weekend.

a.      Each day will be deemed a handicap qualifying completion and as such the winner and runner up will be cut in accordance with the above table. This is regardless of how many days an individual may win or be runner up.

b.      Players scoring an average over 90 across the weekend will be deducted as above on shots deducted.

c.      Players scoring an average below 90 across the weekend will gain a shot back as above on shots back.

This means that Handicaps will be adjusted after each trophy competition. This should give a fair reflection of one’s playing ability and give everyone a reasonably good chance of winning.
