2014 CAPTAIN’S WEEKEND – May 15-18 - DUNTON HALL, NORFOLK.

22 members and 2 guests attended at this 1850s Victorian 650-bedded hostelry set in 150 acres of Norfolk countryside. The par-71 course had something to test everyone’s prowess, mettle and stamina. Combined with some of the hottest weather that has been seen this year it was somewhat sapping.

The 1st practice round on the Thursday saw all eager to get away, with one four-ball sneaking in a spare vacant slot well before the allotted time, with the others enviously waiting their turn!

Not being able to book in until 3pm. and, with a 2.42 tee time, all added to the frustration of booking in late, an 8.30 evening meal time and a carvery which had been somewhat delayed. However, there was plenty to have and, it was only having it every night that gave the monotony. As you can imagine with 650 beds we were only an item in the hotel’s curriculum. Maybe more attention could be paid to the tee-off times in future so that we go off early and don’t allow over 6 hours in-between starts for the pm round.

Apart from the normal buggy problems (something the Secretary doesn’t ever want to be involved with again) all went pleasantly.

Dave’s brunch, final scorings and prize-giving on the Sunday went off as follows:

Secretary received another thank you from the Society. No wonder he likes the job!

President’s Shield:  R. Costi (to be delivered engraved);

Nearest Pin: Friday-D. Morris; PM: A. McCathry; Saturday: A. Gumble; Sunday: R. Cook

Taylor Trophy:  M. Smith 37pts, R. Costi 36pts.

Hatley Trophy: S.Edwards, M. Smith. Swindle: P. Scott.

Weekend winners (best 3 cards from 5):

1st: Malcolm Smith 110pts;

2nd: Richard Costi 107 (on count back);

3rd: David Morris 107.

The captain then thanked all for their attendance and hoped all would make it the Enfield Golf Club on June 20th. Have a safe journey home.

Captains weekend 2013

The event was held at the Suffolk Golf Country Club. 9/ 12 May 13. It was attended by 20 members. Should have been 21 but unfortunately Andy Beatty had to pull, out due to bad health. We missed his mode of dress, that said Dave Morris done his best to compete with Andy (see the photos!!!)
The course was regrettably not in very good condition, greens had been cored and not dressed . I think it must have been holiday weekend for MOLES, there Mole holes everywhere. I have submitted Joe Rayfieds cv. To Hovis, he will be outstanding in their Slice bread department. Most of us found the water hazards ,Dave Morris said he had never seen so much water ,then went out and played the rounds of his life. He virtually killed off the weekend with some outstanding golf. On rounds  1/2  42/39 points. It was nice to see one of our guests Kent Gillet who does not play a lot of golf win a nearest the pin prize.
Results; Friday am. Hatley Cup. D.Morris
Saturday am. Northern Shield, Malcy.Smith
Sunday am. Spring Cup, Adam Gumble
Overhaul winner of the weekend with 111 points over 3 rounds David Morris
This years captain Adam Gumble, thanked all for attending his weekend. He named Steve Edwards as his vice captain

Nazeing Golf Club

A very good turn out for the Fred Muntzer Memorial with the older members of Nazeing joining us for the day (thx guys). The weather was kind and the sun was shining in the afternoon. Much money has been spent on Nazeing and it showed with the greens playing well and the fairways in good shape. The course favour the better golfer and quality showed shot after shot for those lucky 3 playing with our Treasurer. David Hatley chipped in off the green for a 2 as well as many other fantastic shots were played throughout the day making him a worthy winner on 40pts (cut 4 ) and Gumble senior coming in second with 34pts (cut 1)

The food was great and it was nice to have money to buy Freds wife some flowers

Abbotsley (kindly supplied by our president)

The 2012 Captain’s weekend held at the Abbotsley Golf Club, St. Neots, Cambridgeshire, was attended by 23 members who were highly delighted with the course the food, staff, and the hospitality shown. Excellent entertainment complemented the Friday evening in the form of a versatile saxophonist, Sandra Grant, whilst other members disappeared into St. Neots to sample the heady nightlife being offered by the town. Not a lot I gathered, but strange.

Unfortunately, due to an under occupation in the months prior, the smell of mothballs and an occasional cesspit odour, slightly marred the otherwise club’s hotel excellence. The deal gained by our Secretary on buggy prices however, cheered all participants.

Arrival on the Thursday saw everyone eager to get out and show their paces. The course deciding that this was not on! Adam Gumble, as one of our lower handicap players, damaging two clubs in the first round and seeing him miss the AGM to go home for replacements!! A challenging course (which was testing, except for Steve Edwards, who achieved 40pts on one round!), with every obstacle known to us mortals.

Top score, for a round, indeed the weekend, was the 40 stated earlier, with Gary Tempany achieving 35pts off of 22 as next best. Majority scoring was in the 20s with even some coming in under that! The weekend score (best 3 of 5 cards) was 104 points by Steve Edwards (that name again). Coming second was Mike Stubbins with 99pts, narrowly followed by Gary Tempany with 98.

The numerous prizes and presentations went off admirably, with the Taylor Trophy being won by Gary Tempany; Northern Shield Steve Edwards and the Hatley Trophy by Wayne Brennan. These all preceded with the Nearest the Pin and other miscellaneous prizes.

Despite purchases of Society shirts, there was not much effort in them being worn. They are comfortable after the first wash (for those with delicate skin). It was nice to see all members taking note of previous dinner dress requirements, though it would be nice if we could all start in unison in future.

We were fortunate in the fact the weather was kind to us and, though chilly on occasion it only rained overnight. Let’s hope all our matches stay likewise.

The Society’s 32nd AGM, held on the Friday evening, duly noted the name put forward for captaincy for 2013, though the submission of that for 2014 was not divulged (is it a secret?). We trust that the courses and weekend selection will be as pleasant, and contain all the ingredients to be enjoyed in 2012

Mill Green

Joe Rayfield's first day as new captain and everything ran by clock work with a good turn out as one would expect from Mr Rayfield. Steve Cole played well and won the Don Roy Trophy with a great 37 pts... well done to Steve

It was sad to hear that the Foreign Legion has folded after running for 7years.... There were a number of good British Legion members like Peter Marshall  who moved and they are more than welcome to join us once again

There are still a number of vacancies for the weekend but a call will need to be made soon

The Hertfordshire

I really fun day with Uncle Roy joining the members for Christmas lunch, some great golf from young Rayfield who went back to play 3 off the Tee on the 16th which obviously made a difference and a good few beers were had where Taylor junior was rather impaired ;)

Winner Joe Rayfield - now off 25.... should be lower as he looks like a pro

Nearest the pin Gary Tempany - it was really close

Terry gave a nice speech after serving his term as Captain and he handed over to the winner Joe Rayfield our new captain for 2012. Terry has been a fine captain :).

Joe thanked Eddy for the work he does which was echoed by the members

Toot hill

Some good golf i hear from Rob Smith (42pts) & Malcolm Smith (42pts) (not related so i've been told ;)) to win the Stapleford challenge and the Legion Putt. Good rounds from Tom Shutler (39pts) and Terry (38pts)  that on many days would have won. A good hit from Tom D won nearest the pin. (he did have one then :)) and Tom Shuttler won nearest the pin in 2

David Morris has been busy with some big cuts for the winners and the runner ups.... 15 in total across the 4 players

Pansangher

Some say David Hatley must be getting lessons off a top pro but as they say cream always comes to the top ;)... It was a great moment for him to win Steves Trophy. Pansangher is always such a great venue and this was no different with the course in such great condition and the lunch was great

Potters Bar

The weather was kind to us all on this excellent course. The fish lunch was great and the lady took a shine to Joe and gave him extra chips.... the only thing was that she was the wrong side of 70 ;)

In the morning we played for the spring trophy which was won by Mattie with Terry Taylor was the runner up and in the afternoon David Morris, David Hatley and Gary Runagall had over 20points at the half way point which David Hatley went on to win the Summer Cup on the count back even though Tom and Joe tried to nobble him on the 17th. David Morris was runner up again... its only time before he gets a big cut as he is playing well

Joe shared the weekend venue for 2012 which seems fantastic... deposits now please

The Captains weekend May 2011

The 2011 Captain’s weekend at Wensum Valley Golf Club, Taversham, Norfolk was attended by 27 members and guests who were highly delighted with the whole event. Not only was the hotel complex excelling in excellence of food, hospitality and service, but the two courses on offer were a challenge for our multi-handicapped players.

Top score, for a round, achieved over the four days was a modest 43 points!! This from a course, and player (Gary Tempany), that wasn’t too modest in its presentation. He went on to tie with the weekend score (best 3 of 5 cards) with 102 points with Dave Morris. Gary won on the highest single score over the weekend. Not to be outdone, guest Peter Scott, playing off 14, scored 107 and picked up the guest prize.

The numerous prizes and presentations went off admirably, with Dave Hatley winning his own trophy and his hamper, the Northern Shield being won by Gary Tempany and Dave Morris picked up the Taylor Trophy that was moved to the Sunday. The Captain presented further prizes for nearest the pins, most bunkers and the Joker of the holiday which went to Martin Taylor for sleeping with a guest from another society.... long last we have found someone that can sleep through his snoring .

Despite being previously informed of the dress requirement on these occasions, it was ignored by a few, much to the chargin of the Captain, who, along with others, felt they had let the Society down. Enough said, but please take note for future engagements.

The Society’s 31st AGM, held on the Friday evening, duly noted the names put forward for captaincy in 2013 as Adam Gumble. We trust that their courses and weekend selection will be as pleasant, and contain all the ingredients enjoyed this year.

May 2011

Sadly Fred Munster passed away this month. His funeral which clashed with the Captains weekendwas attended by Eddy Butler and Ron Taylor. Terry has a minute silence on the T on the day of his funeral which was well respected

The Society sent flowers shaped as a golf ball on a green grass with a yellow T

Our thoughts and prayers go to Freds family
